The current obsession with Shanghai continues. But this time, the giant fashion house Christian Dior has been labelled "racist" by fashion & media critics alike, following the recent images in their Shanghai Dreamers campaign that depicts Chinese people as Maoist robots.
Let's take a looksie:
The house has been criticised for promoting Orientalism and conformity in China's history, featuring the Chinese as a featureless mass whilst Dior represents individuality and freedom. Harsh!!
We're a little torn here - obviously not intentionally racist, but certainly clumsy in applicationa. Is this campaign merely a "dialogue" between Chinese and Western fashion in the 60s~90s... or a blatent statement that all Chinese people look the same?
The jury's out, what do you think?
